CHAPTER 3 - WING ORGANIZATION
back | forward

3.1.  WING STRUCTURE

  1. You are now part of the Detachment 028 Cadet Wing.  The Wing has several divisions to it.  It is first divided into three Groups: Operations, Logistics, Support.  It is then divided into six Squadrons: 11th & 12th Operational, 21st  & 22nd  Logistical,  31st & 32nd Support.  Each Squadron will then have two Flights; starting at Alpha and increasing accordingly to match the number of Flights that the Wing has assigned.

  2. The Wing is self-sufficient, meaning it is the responsibility of the cadets to run and maintain the functionality of the Wing, with guidance from the Cadre.

  3. The POCs of the Wing fill the structure of the leadership positions in the Corps.  GMCs fill the positions within the flights and staffs in order to gain experience and to make decisions which affect the Corps.

3.2.  CADET CHAIN OF COMMAND

  1. It is very important to not only know, but also to know how to use your chain of command.  If you have any questions, concerns, or problems, you should always go to your Flight Commander first.  Depending on it’s severity, it will eventually reach the Wing/CC, the COC, or the PAS.

  2. If you ever feel uncomfortable talking to your Flight Commander or anyone in your direct chain of command, then it may be permitted to supercede that part of the chain.

  3. Remember, the Cadre also has an open door policy, there time is yours, but an effort must first be made to correctly follow your chain of command.

  4. The chain of command is on the website under the Warrior Knowledge Section.

3.3.  CADET TRAILER

The cadet trailer is for your benefit and use.  The cadet trailer has many uses and should be taken care of.  It is where a cadet can come and relax between classes, get a snack from the Corps refrigerator, play some pool, listen to music, check your AFROTC mail, and hold meetings.

  1. Upon entering the cadet trailer, you must be within the Detachment and Air Force regulations.  See AFROTCI 36-2008

  2. The back room in the cadet trailer is where you will find your personal mailbox.  This mailbox should be checked daily before COB.

  3. The Corps refrigerator is open to all cadets.  It will be stocked with various snacks and drinks.  Each cadet is responsible for paying the correct amount for each item that is purchased.  THERE ARE NO  IOUs OR CREDITS, NO EXCEPTIONS!  There is a cash box that is located in the refrigerator to place your money in.  You must use the correct change.

  4. There is a file cabinet located in the cadet trailer that is labeled “Master Question File”.  This is where you will find tests and quizzes from various classes that other cadets have placed there in the past semesters.  This is for your benefit and you should feel free to use its resources.  It you are having trouble in a class, go to the Master Questions File and study from a certain professor’s past tests.  You may sign out a certain test, make a photo copy of it, and then return it to the Master Question File.  The Corps also has a tutoring program if you need more help with your academics.

  5. The cadet library is located on the North wall of the trailer.  It has many books relating to military history and other such topics.  It also has videos from AF News and videos that the Corps produced.  All checkouts are done on the Honor System.

3.4.  COMMUNICATION / INFORMATION

Communication is most vital part of any unit, and is the key to its successful operation.  Without it, nothing would be accomplished.  This is why Det. 028 has several means of getting information to its cadets.

  1. Bulletin Boards:  The Corps bulletin board is located the door to the Cadre offices.  It will contain the weekly Ops Orders and other information pertaining to Corps activities.  The Cadet bulletin board is located inside the cadet trailer, on the east wall.  It will contain the weekly Ops Orders, messages from the IG, a calendar of events, and other pertinent information.  All cadets are required to check this board daily.

  2. E-mail:  The Corps uses a system called “AFROTC Talk” to distribute messages to your e-mail account.  This is in the attempts of the Air Force to reduce the amount of paper we use.  It is a very good system to get information out to everyone.  If you are a cadet new to the Detachment, you need to subscribe to AFROTC Talk.

  1. To subscribe to AFROTC Talk, go to any computer terminal and log into your school account.  In whatever particular mail program you have, enter the in the following:

    To: afrotc-talk@pr.erau.edu
From: (your name will automatically appear here)
    cc: (leave blank)
    Subject: subscribe
  2.  This is all the information you need to provide.  Once this is done, send the message and you will automatically be subscribed to AFROTC Talk and will receive all of its messages.  If you need to unsubscribe,  follow the instructions above, except put “unsubscribe” in the Subject block.

  3. E-mail is becoming the more popular way to distribute information today.  This is why it is very important that all cadets check their e-mail once a day (minimum).

  1. Phone Roster:  Every cadet will receive a phone roster containing each cadet’s name, phone number, e-mail address, rank, position, and flight.

  2. Calendar:  There is a calendar of events located on the cadet bulletin board.  It will list dates of important upcoming events.

  3. Web Site:  The Detachment has a website that includes; warrior knowledge, the cadet guide, ops orders, a cadet database, announcements, and other general information about the detachment.  You can access the Web Page on the World Wide Web at: http://afrotc.pr.erau.edu

3.5.  CORPS FUNDS

The Cadet Corps is a non-profit organization, and therefore must collect money from its cadets each semester to pay for its various expenses.  The money that is collected is used to help pay for the Corps barbecues, drill team equipment/competitions, cadet awards, staff budgets, and Dining Out.   The cadet officer in charge of Fund Raising will notify you of the one time amount you must pay.  This fee is voluntary, but if you do not pay it, you will be charged for each function that you attend at a higher cost.

3.6.  HAZING

Any type of hazing is prohibited within the Corps.  Any cadet found hazing another cadet will have a meeting with the COC. Hazing is defined as: To persecute or harass with meaningless, difficult, or humiliating tasks (American Heritage Dictionary).

3.7.  HONOR CODE

“WE WILL NOT LIE, STEAL, OR CHEAT, NOR TOLERATE AMONG US ANYONE WHO DOES.”

Cadets in AFROTC live by the Honor Code, and it is taken very seriously.  If you are caught breaking the Honor Code, you could face an Honors & Ethics board and possibly be removed from the AFROTC program.

3.8.  MANDATORY / VOLUNTARY EVENTS

  1. Throughout the semester, the Corps holds many events.  Some of these events are mandatory, while others are voluntary.  The following is a list of mandatory events.  All other events are voluntary and you can not be reprimanded for not attending.

  1. All LLABS

  2. All Corps PFTs

  3. All Physical Training Sessions

  4. One Wing retreat per semester

  5. One Dining In/Out per year

  1. If you miss a mandatory event, you must submit an official memo stating the reason for your absence to the appropriate individual in-charge within 72 hours.

  2. If you exceed the maximum allowable absences for the semester, you will fail LLAB and possibly face removal from the AFROTC program.  Note:  The letterhead for the official memo can be found in the computer lab under h:\afrotc\det028.  It is a Microsoft Word document.

3.9.  STAFF INVOLVEMENT

As a GMC, you will have many opportunities to help out the Corps by being on one of the various staffs.  This is a good way to start AFROTC career and begin to learn about how the Wing is run.  A GMC is limited to a maximum of two staff positions outside normal flight duties.  A GMC is not required to be on a staff, however it will only help you become more experienced and noticed sooner.

3.10.  AREAS OF RESPECT

Here at Detachment 028, we have many traditions, and one such tradition is to give respect to those that have gone before us.  There are two main areas on campus where a cadet must be aware of.

  1. POW/MIA Rock:  This rock is located between the Cadre offices and the Uniform Room.  It is the only large rock with the POW/MIA symbol painted on it.  Whenever you pass by the POW/MIA Rock, you should salute it and quietly say to yourself the phrase, “you are gone, but not forgotten”.

  2. Cadet Memorial Area:  This area is located directly south of the quad area located in the center of campus.  It can be recognized by several small bricks that have been placed on the ground.  These bricks represent those cadets who have graduated from Det. 028 and then lost their lives while serving their country.  The actions that apply to this area are the same as the POW/MIA Rock.
